China Chair Squawks at Huawei News

Responding to reports the company has secretly funded research at US universities through an independent foundation, new chairman of the House Select Committee on China Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich) is taking aim at Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

The research funding is a way for China to steal US innovations, the chairman said.  The Administration should suspend all export licenses to Huawei and consider other steps such as placing the company on the Specifically Designated National list, he stated.

“Huawei has shown time and time again that its presence in America is a national security risk, and now here it is again, tricking Americans into giving up their latest innovations and research to a company at the beck and call of the Chinese Communist Party.”

The chairman’s statement follows on a  Bloomberg news service report that Huawei, which is already blacklisted in the United States, is secretly funding cutting-edge research at US universities through an independent Washington-based foundation.
Huawei is the sole funder of a research competition that has awarded millions of dollars since its inception in 2022 and attracted hundreds of proposals from scientists around the world, including those at top US universities that have banned their researchers from working with the company, Bloomberg reported.

The competition is administered by the Optica Foundation, an arm of the nonprofit professional society Optica, whose members’ research on light underpins technologies such as communications, biomedical diagnostics and lasers.
