Beijing Calls for End to 232 Campaign

China has called on the United States to terminate its Section 232 tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum, and to stop its ongoing national security investigation into imported pharmaceuticals. Speaking at a regular press conference, Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) spokesperson He Yongqian denounced the measures as unjustified and harmful to global trade.

“These actions are a typical manifestation of unilateralism and protectionism,” He said, according to China Daily. He added that the U.S. tariffs “not only undermine the multilateral trading system, but also infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of other countries.”

The Ministry emphasized that these measures fail to support the development of U.S. industries and instead distort international trade norms. “Resorting to national security as a pretext for imposing trade restrictions is neither reasonable nor legitimate under WTO rules,” He stated.

In its coverage, China Daily reported that Beijing is urging Washington to “engage in equal-footed dialogue to properly address each other’s concerns” and to pursue cooperation rather than confrontation.

MOFCOM reiterated China’s commitment to defending its interests through legal means if necessary, while leaving the door open for consultations aimed at resolving the dispute.
