Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today introduced Resolutions to terminate President Trump’s "unlawful use of 'emergency' authorities" to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
The Resolutions address what they contend is an abuse of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which it has used to justify tariffs.
The legal foundation of IEEPA, the National Emergencies Act, allows Congress to introduce a Privileged Resolution to terminate the authority, which must be brought to the House for a floor vote within 15 days. There is little hope of the resolution gaining a majority in the house, let alone gathering enough support to overide a presidential veto.
