Legislation being championed by a bipartisan group of senators would encourage the Administration to engage in trade negotiations to ensure secure supply chains for medical goods and services.
The Medical Supply Chain Resiliency Act is co-sponsored by Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chris Coons (D-Del), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo). Sen. Tillis originally introduced the legislation in 2023.
“By strengthening trade partnerships with our allies and expanding domestic manufacturing, we can enhance our nation’s preparedness for future health challenges,” Sen. Tillis commented.
The bill aims to ensure the United States is not reliant on China for critical medical goods and services by authorizing the Administration to negotiate trade agreements with trusted partners like the European Union, Japan, Switzerland.
“By expanding US engagement with our allies across the globe, this legislation would combat shortages of medical products and supplies by strengthening supply chain resiliency and safeguarding against future health crises,” the bill’s sponsors said.
