State Dept. Designates Three Guatemalan Officials for Corruption Involvement

The U.S. State Department designated two former ministers and one current vice minister from Guatemala due to their involvement in "significant corruption," an Oct. 31 statement reads.

"Gendri Rocael Reyes Mazariegos, former Minister of the Interior, Alberto Pimentel Mata, former Minister of Energy and Mines (MEM) and Oscar Rafael Perez Ramirez, Vice Minister of Sustainable Development under the MEM" were designated because they "accepted bribes in exchange for their performance of their public functions during their tenures," according to the statement.

The State Department emphasized that it is working to combat government corruption, noting the recent (Aug. 20) Guatemalan elections.
