The United States imposed additional 50% tariffs on about US$20 billion of Canadian goods early Saturday after last-minute trade negotiations collapsed, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to recall Canada’s negotiating team and promise “dollar for dollar” retaliation. Ottawa blamed eleventh-hour U.S. demands it called “unfair” and “uneconomic,” while U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Canada of retreating from earlier commitments, leaving no further talks scheduled and clouding the broader review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact.
