Bown State’s Chief Economist

Chad P. Bown is the new State Department Chief Economist, serving as the Secretary of State’s most senior advisor on economics.

Mr. Bown has been senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics since 2016. There, His research examined international trade laws and institutions, trade negotiations, and trade disputes.  Much of his published research has addressed the WTO Dispute Settlement process.

In his new role, Mr. Bown will lead the Office of the Chief Economist, working to strengthen State’s ability to conduct economic analysis on high-priority issues, and to advance US interests on foreign policy issues which have an economic dimension.

He also will lead OCE in building economic capacity and understanding within the Department and in connecting the Department to domestic and international stakeholders in the community of professional economists.

Mr. Brown received a BA magna cum laude in economics and international relations from Bucknell University and a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
